Brouwerij West's New San Pedro Brewery and Taproom Really Glows

LA's craft beer journeyman finally finds a home at the Port of Los Angeles.

Farley Elliott is the Senior Editor at Eater LA and the author of Los Angeles Street Food: A History From Tamaleros to Taco Trucks. He covers restaurants in every form, from breaking news to the culture, people, and history that surrounds LA's dining landscape.

Witness the rise of Brouwerij West, one of the Los Angeles’ most important breweries, which has for years been producing and bottling their line of Belgian-inspired beers on other peoples’ systems. Now they’ve got their own massive new space in at the Port of Los Angeles, and it’s just about ready to hit the spotlight.

The outsized warehouse location in San Pedro is actually a former WWII-era Navy warehouse, with over 25,000 square feet of room to play with. Owner Brian Mercer has been working on the place pretty heavily for more than a year, retrofitting the decades-old building to suit the modern needs of a fast-growing craft beer enterprise.

The glowing taproom space inside the larger warehouse is illuminated by a weave of string lights, while long wooden tables stand in as communal seating. There’s a long poured cement bar and, not far away, Mercer’s 5,000 barrel brewing system. There will also be a small retail area for takeaway bottle sales and merchandise.

Brouwerij West at the Port of Los Angeles should open mid-February in San Pedro, keeping evening and weekend hours for local drinkers and anyone willing to make the drive. In fact, they’re hiring up for taproom personnel now, should you feel like spending even more time on site.
