Weekend diners at Spartina on Melrose were in for a shock when a trio of men ran in to the restaurant, grabbed knives, and attacked customers and staff.

The shocking story told by NBCLA holds that three unnamed men burst into the corner restaurant at around 3 p.m. and grabbed knives from inside the restaurant, throwing them at diners and each other. Glasses and lanterns were reportedly tossed in the melee.

From there, the alleged assailants moved on to the nearby Vinoteque, where they also grabbed knives and turned the place upside down. Eventually the police arrived in time to nab the men, who reportedly had to be physically restrained.

Reached by text, chef/owner Stephen Kalt said that staff was doing okay after the shake-up. Police have not given a motive so far for the attack.

Last month, a man at Pier Burger in Santa Monica similarly attacked diners and kitchen staff, after demanding free food. One employee was stabbed in that incident before the assailant was taken into custody.
