Mar Vista is continuing its upward trend, what with the arrival of the aptly named The Mar Vista and the Status Kuo-turned-Little Fatty switcheroo. Well now there’s another competitor that sounds like it will have some pretty strong offerings. Canela Cocina Latina, a family-owned restaurant by Melo Lemus, has soft opened on Venice Boulevard, with a grand opening scheduled for November 18.
This is an all-day kind of place, with breakfast items like chilaquiles and an omelet oaxaqueno with chorizo and black beans. While the menu has heavy Mexican influence, Lemus also brings her Guatemalan heritage to the table with dishes like pepian, a roasted sesame and pumpkin seed stew. Other signature lunch and dinner dishes include the early favorite soul taco filled with mashed sweet potato, ground turkey, and kale, and the pollo en mole.
Canela doesn't use animal bi-products in its dishes, meaning its beans are lard-free and chicken stock isn't used in its rice or sauces. All in all, it should be a clean-eating place with plenty of vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes. Check out the soft opening menu below.
