Los Angeles must be ready for more fried chicken and doughnuts, because that’s exactly what it’s about to get. East Coast favorite Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, a D.C.-area staple with legions of fans, is on its way to Downtown with a brand new location near 6th and Grand.
Beltway fans have long loved Astro Doughnuts for their inventive flavors and quality ingredients, naming the place on just about any best-of list there is. There’s also a lot to love about the fried chicken side of the equation, with Astro landing on Eater DC’s list of essential options just this past summer.
So what can one expect from the new location on 6th Street, beyond the sweets and chicken? Well, the 400 square foot space won’t be the most inviting place to dine in Downtown (that might be newcomer Tom George), but there will be some limited indoor seating available, as well as a small patio. Look for the usual quartz countertops, industrial accents, and open kitchen.
Once Astro arrives sometime in the first chunk of 2017, you’ll be able to add their name to a growing list of out-of-town fried chicken options looking to make waves in Los Angeles. That includes the already bustling Gus’s World Famous on Crenshaw, as well as inbound Fairfax option Sweet Chick. Add on the mostly takeaway model with its small footprint and low overhead, plus LA’s own admitted love of all things doughnut, and you’ve got all the makings of a surefire winner.
