There’s big work being done on the upcoming Modern Times Beer project coming to Downtown Los Angeles next year. Let’s check in to see how things are progressing.
First, a look back. As noted in March, the upcoming local address of the San Diego-based brewery will be 830 South Olive Street, right in the thick of South Park. It’ll be in good company too, with the likes of Mikkeller happening just blocks away, plus popular drink options like Upstairs at the Ace, Mega Bodega, Broken Spanish, and Barcito not far beyond.
The space will cover some 5,000 square feet in total, and carry all the charm that a beautiful Downtown hundred year old building can muster. That means exposed brick, an open ceiling, and original factory windows, with artwork helping to transform the finished interior. There will be room for 125 to sit inside, plus a patio capable of holding another 25, and the whole thing (art and all) is being designed in-house by the Modern Times team.

Food wrinkles are still being ironed out, but vegan food is definitely in the works. So too is takeaway coffee and pastries, plus a pilot brewhouse for all that craft beer. In total there will be 36 taps, pushing one-off stuff from the brewhouse on site as well as their classic lineup of beers from San Diego.
With heavy construction still going on, expect an opening by early summer, ideally, though these things have a way of taking longer than anticipated. Add to that the massive new project the company is pursuing in Orange County, and suddenly it’s looking like the year of Modern Times.
