The folks behind Panda Express are branching out, bringing Taipei-founded Japanese barbecue concept YakiYan stateside by December 21, with soft opening slated for December 12. This is high-end, glossy stuff, with a beautiful interior and quality meats to go around. Plus, since it's in Hacienda Heights, there's actually a parking lot.
The YakiYan concept is nothing new to Taiwan, with more than two dozen outlets operating there alone. This new Hacienda Heights iteration will be the first in the United States though, and comes at an interesting time as the San Gabriel Valley continues to gobble up a slew of new modern international dining concepts. Most operate at the fast casual or sit-down casual level though, making the finer dining YakiYan a true standout for the area.
YakiYan plays on yakiniku, a style of Japanese barbecue cooked over live coals. The style is already rather popular in Los Angeles, but the move to land in Hacienda Heights should play well with crowds from Whittier and beyond. Expect some upscale indulgence here, as YakiYan brings an omakase set menu option using prime beef only. You’ll also find sake, beer, wine, and a full slate of cocktails to go along with the more upscale surroundings.
Expect a grand opening for YakiYan on December 21 at 5 p.m., with a soft opening starting Monday, December 12. During that time, customers can snag a reservation by calling the restaurant directly at (626) 581-0080.
