And now, a semi-regular update from San Gabriel Valley's vibrant restaurant scene:
1) Monterey Park: The Alhambrafication of Monterey Park is marching on with the opening of Pieology Pizza. Panda Express Innovation Kitchen's second location, with its boba milk tea drinks just opened a few months ago, and it seems the city council is dead set on turning Atlantic Square into the center of all chain restaurant activity in west SGV. At least the Pieology will have beer. 2098 S. Atlantic Blvd
2) Temple City: Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong, which sports top-notch Korean barbecue, is coming to Temple City's Camellia Square. Despite ongoing construction and original opening date of 2015, it looks like opening date is not going to happen any time soon. Torrance and Irvine are the next two KHD Baekjeong locations. 5770 Rosemead Blvd. Suite. 100
update: Reps for Beakjeong say Temple City should be open by May of this year, with both Irvine and Torrance targeting towards June.
3) San Gabriel: Yu Tian Xia, a company that also operated Boiling Point style resaurants in China, has opened a massive "Chongqing" style hot pot restaurant at the old King Teppan space. This is not your grandmother's hot potting buffet, as each meat addition rings in at approximately $12 dollars. For their grand opening, the restaurant invited the local fu er dai car club which brought in a gaggle of Chinese millennials and their flashy cars. 250 W Valley Blvd, Ste L
4) Rosemead: Nitrogen a la minute ice cream has been a trend that has mostly escaped West SGV until now. Sweet Lab opened last month, and features both liquid nitrogen ice cream as well as Cantonese gaidanzai (egg waffles). Even more interesting, due to Sichuanese ownership, the small cafe features maocai (Sichuan style hodgepodge) sold by the pound. Even better, the protein section of the maocai boasts super-authentic spicy pig brain pot. 8526 Valley Blvd, Ste 112
5) San Gabriel: Sweet Dreams, a Cantonese-style dessert shack, has taken over Chatime. 301 W Valley Blvd #102
6) Monterey Park: Duck House, the Peking duck specialist, has applied for a full liquor license. The conditional use permit change hearing is pending. 501 S Atlantic Blvd
