Colorful Westwood Mexican food shop Tacos Tu Madre looks to be expanding, landing a none-too-subtle corner location in Los Feliz. The open space is as tiny as the Westside original, with only stand up room for dining in, and appears to be nearly ready to roll.
The white tile-lined address is far along in its construction cycle now, with the elbow-high wraparound counter already installed and the basic buildout complete. There’s also the very necessary ‘Make Tacos Not War’ neon sign up and hanging, and of course the fully realized multi-colored mural splashed on the building. The kitchen area, which can easily be seen from the sidewalk, is essentially all that’s left, though equipment is being installed at this very moment.
Even though the former El Greco Cafe in Los Feliz shuttered a while back, it’s still been surprising to see this second Tacos Tu Madre outlet arrive so quickly. The first iteration is less than six months old, after all, and while the concept certainly seemed capable of expansion there was no indication that another outlet would be coming down the line so fast.
Working a menu of updated favorites, Tacos Tu Madre owners Joshua Pourgol and Oliver Mateen hope to appeal to the broad Los Feliz base. There are simple (and relatively cheap) options like carne asada and grilled chicken, as well as duck mole, ahi tuna, and a vegan banh mi. You can add fried eggs to anything, and there are plans to also serve cold brew coffee.
No official word on when Tacos Tu Madre Los Feliz will open, but expect it to be springtime for sure, if not within the next few weeks. Once open, expect lunch through dinner hours, with the possible expansion into late night service on weekends as well.
