Looks like long-gone Koreatown coffee favorite BrewWell is on track for a strong return, posting news last night to their Facebook page about an upcoming location on Sunset Boulevard.
The address, 6515 Sunset in Hollywood, is an interesting one. First, it’s a ways away from the coffee company’s original digs off 8th Street in Koreatown, which were unceremoniously shuttered after the land underneath them was sold off to developers. Second, the storefront seems to be at least a bit smaller than the original, which makes one wonder how sisters Grace and Elizabeth Rhee will tackle the new space.
Perhaps most importantly for the new location is the question of competition. Not only has longtime option Groundwork existed a couple of blocks away for years, but just up the street there’s a new Demitasse that’s even closer to the heart of Hollywood. And now, almost across the street, comes a third L.A. outlet of Philz, the popular pourover brand from the Bay Area.
Still, the Rhees were able to build themselves quite the following with their unique lattes, strong design sense, and solid rotation of roasters, which should bode well for their upcoming location. Signage is up now but there’s certainly still work to be done inside, so don’t expect to see BrewWell come back to life tomorrow. Soon enough though, you’ll once again be able to enjoy their uniquely impressive coffee — just in a new neighborhood this time.
