A big step for modern Mexican food

LA Mag has lots to say about the recent Providence guest chef dinner series, which concluded with none other than Enrique Olvera of Mexico City's Pujol and New York City's Cosme. Calling the high-minded dinner a watershed moment for the modern Mexican food movement, the mag says that it could mean big things for the future of the genre.

Project Angel Food at Redbird

For today only, Downtown’s Redbird will be participating in a Project Angel Food fundraiser meant to raise money for the free-meal-giving organization. Head to the bar and order the Angel’s Share cocktail ($10) and half the money from each one sold will be sent to Project Angel Food, which is the cost of one meal for one person. Open for lunch and dinner.

Locanda del Lago hires up

There’s a new chef at Locanda del Lago in Santa Monica, with Daniele Turchetti stepping in behind the stoves. He's the man who for years ran the team that brought you some of the city's most luminary restaurants, and so now you can pick his brain over a Caesar salad if you'd like, and it's all for charity.

How the Philz Coffee guys do things

That's the lesson behind this Food GPS interview with Philz founders Phil and Jacob Jaber, who have expanded from a single SF location to locations up and down the coast, including a new recent location in Hollywood.

Panini Cafe keeps expanding

Localized Southern California brand Panini Cafe keeps expanding, opening up a new location in Orange County while plotting further expansion into L.A. proper. The next proposed neighborhood is Santa Monica, with a Little Tokyo location at 2nd and San Pedro in the works as well, says a tipster.
