Well that was fast. After coming out swinging a couple of months ago as potential new concept City Sports Lounge, the former Downtown Johnny's / Murph's is once again in flux. Not only did City Sports never actually manage to open, but there's apparently signage up now for the place to turn into Mr. Furley's Bar.
Putting aside all the different apostrophe'd naming iterations, it seems like Mr. Furley's could be the one that sticks. The nighttime only spot is meant for late night drinkers, and hopes to really attach itself to the area as a classed-up dive bar for the 1 a.m. crowd. That would mean a considerable paring back from the TV-heavy decor ideas being tossed around for City Sports Lounge, and likely a dimly lit, brick-lined interior with lots of whiskey.
The team behind Mr. Furley's appears to be the same as those folks who operate The Brickyard Pub, a duet of casual spots in North Hollywood and Hollywood proper. Though the vibe will be different, expect a casual feel and a menu (which you can see now) that even includes a few late night breakfast options like pancakes and porridge. How very Nighthawk of them.
No official word on when Mr. Furley's Bar will open officially, but tipsters say that signage is up and work is still being finalized inside.
