Highland Park has had a hell of a week of openings, capped off today by the sudden arrival of coffee shop newcomer Kindness & Mischief.
The crowdfunded coffee operation lands right on bustling Figueroa, across the street from The Greyhound and steps from popular Civil Coffee. The shop is a nice, subtle blend of colorful touches and pared-back simplicity, with brick walls, lots of open shelving touched off with the occasional bit of literature, and a herringbone-tiled wraparound bar.
More than a year ago, Mo Maravilla and her team set out to create a community-forward coffee shop with the help of some anonymous Kickstarter backers, and walked away from the process with over $33,000. Folks have been following along on the journey since then, with today's soft-opening quietly announced on Instagram just yesterday.
Mostly Kindness & Mischief's soft-opening means you should expect some fluctuating hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for now) and the possibility that by the time you roll through they might be out of pastries. So far they haven't run low on beans from Rose Park Roasters or Compelling & Rich, though. Eventually the plan is to keep daily hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, starting officially on May 7.
