Got a bit of extra cash laying around? Consider dropping some into this Kickstarter for a new cocktail bar in Historic Filipinotown that’s hoping to become one of the few all female-run bars in Los Angeles. Called Genever, the plan is to convert the former DIY party space Home Room into a full-fledged bar, rocking evening hours and serving a variety of cocktails, beer, and wine.
The above-mentioned Kickstarter actually seems to be mostly icing on the cake for co-owners Roselma Samala, Patricia Perez, and Christine Sumiller, who are looking to use the requested $30,000 in funds for opening needs like inventory and bar supplies. The space itself has already been acquired, and this pending ABC license shows things are moving along quite well already. In fact, according to the trio’s own timeline, it seems Genever could be ready to roll within the next few months.
The plan, apparently, is to open by late May, barring any setbacks. Calling Genever a "little bar lounge," the women behind the upcoming concept say that they’ll be able to transform the 1,100 square food space into a cozy 43-seat bar that keeps evening hours during the week and extended hours on weekends.
It’s an interesting time for Historic Fililpinotown, as more and more construction is heading into the area. Even nearby newcomers like Crawford’s in Westlake are helping to turn the area over, playing to the rise of younger, more varied clientele in the neighborhoods. With Genever, that stretch of Beverly could well have another nice drinking option on its hands, come late spring or early summer.
