Mar Vista and Palms continue to rise to the occasion with news today of a new restaurant heading out that way. Appropriately called The Mar Vista, the forthcoming project from D. Brandon Walker and Jill Davie (the former chef de cuisine at Josie) promises not only a strong all-day menu but also lots of philanthropy.
The upcoming concept takes over the shuttered Club Good Hurt on Venice Boulevard, just east of Centinela. Owing to the space’s past as a venue for bands, The Mar Vista promises live music as well, with a focus on local Angelenos, though it seems the space will be more than a bar with a touch of food. On the restaurant’s otherwise-empty menu page there’s an emphasis that The Mar Vista will be "a chef-driven dining experience where food comes first," as opposed to, say, a mediocre dinner-and-a-show spot.
Chef Walker will be leaning into the philanthropy angle hard at The Mar Vista as well, given his longstanding ties to places like St. Joseph Center with Bread and Roses Cafe. There, they serve up to 150 homeless every day, with volunteers acting as front of house staff and serving their guests in the style of a traditional restaurant. Walker is also a former Chopped champion, having used his resourcefulness to win the $10,000 grand prize on the show back in 2013.
The Mar Vista still seems a ways off, with a hardhat media walkthrough scheduled for next month. The plan, if all goes well, is to open by Labor Day weekend, though that timetable is still very much in the works.
