It looks like new life for the former Azeen’s Afghani Restaurant space in Pasadena, with news today that a modern Mexican concept with Orange County ties will be moving in.
The new restaurant is to be called Maestro, and comes from the chef/owner Daniel Godinez from Orange County. Godinez is the face and name behind Anepalco in Orange, and has a separate Santa Ana dinner concept called El Mercado in the works. Prior to that, the Acapulco, Mexico native spent years working at the upscale Stonehill Tavern in Dana Point.
With Maestro, Godinez says the plan is to deliver traditional Mexican dishes in a new way, relying on modern techniques to deliver interesting results to classic favorites. The menu and space are still very much in the works though, so don’t expect anything until around September.
Still, it’s a big push for Godinez, who hopes to expand his growing restaurant empire beyond the Orange County borders. Anepalco has recently undergone a new, more modern Mexican menu change, and the soon-to-arrive El Mercado should help solidify things for him in Santa Ana. Now with the Union Street takeover of the decade-long Azeen’s, which in itself was for years a stalwart in the Pasadena community before succumbing to higher rents, Godinez is poised to make a big play in Los Angeles.
