Just in time for some scorching summer weather comes Magpies Softserve, an ice cream outlet crafted by chefs Warren Schwartz and wife Rose Schwartz. The Silver Lake space should be ready by later this month, too.
You can catch a peek at the in-progress interiors over on the Magpies Instagram feed, but the gist is this: Warren Schwartz and pastry chef Rose have long wanted to open a casual ice cream / dessert spot, something akin to a housemade iteration of a Dairy Queen. Now they’re making that dream come true, from a small storefront space in a strip mall on the corner of Hyperion and Griffith Park Boulevard.
With Magpies, the plan is to get back to true basics. Instead of relying on powders and mixes, Schwartz and his team will be crafting true soft serve from scratch, and making the ingredients in house as well. Final construction and inspections are still underway, but expect things to fall in place by mid-month.
Local, one-off soft serve ice cream stands and stalls are massively popular on the East Coast, but for some reason (outside of the occasional Foster’s Freeze or CVT Soft Serve truck) they don’t much exist here. Instead, Los Angeles is a gelato and scoop shop town, with multiple locations of places like Salt & Straw and McConnell’s.
Schwartz has long been a part of the culinary scene in Los Angeles, for years at popular Westside Tavern and more recently at Warren’s Blackboard up in the Valley. He’s even been helping to craft meals for Munchery, the food delivery app with access into San Francisco, New York City, and Seattle as well.
