Downtown's Perfect Meld of Sports and Cocktail Bar

Just in time for the Los Angeles Rams

It’s been a quick turn for the new Brack Shop Tavern, as the former Barrel Down gets a new look and a new team to run the place.

Here’s an opening look at the new Brack Shop Tavern, which quietly begins service as of tomorrow in Downtown. The reborn bar space comes from the Last Word Hospitality team, whose most recent project involved converting a Silver Lake Thai restaurant into a wine bar destination. Now, they’re taking back the cocktail pub.

Gone is the former Barrel Down, which hit 7th Street just over a year ago, but struggled to keep its footing in the competitive stretch. With Brack Shop, the hope is that a refined menu and stronger drink program will be enough to draw in locals and the after-work crowd, while the flicker of football and post-season baseball on the TVs can keep people engaged until last call.

Whereas the previous tenant was a lighter brick-walled space for craft beer drinkers, Brack Shop has a darker vibe to it, thanks to some midnight blue paint and a bit of decorative kitsch. You’ll now be able to tuck into some booths in the back or crowd with some friends at the tables along the wall, but more than anything Brack Shop is meant to be a place where customers belly up to the bar and really settle in.

As for the menu, expect everything from a patty melt with pimento cheese to pork empanadas and elote. Brunch service will run from 10 a.m. to midnight on Sundays only, with a variety of sweet and savory cocktails to enjoy.

Brack Shop Tavern opens Tuesday, September 13, with hours Monday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday hours run 10 a.m. to midnight.
