Smorgasburg sandwich prodigy Banh Oui is up and running with a new weekday pop-up in Silver Lake — and they’ve got a particularly unusual location.
The newcomer to the Silver Lake scene has actually landed in some unused office/storage space as part of the larger Hi-Tech Automotive mechanic shop compound. It’s a funky little walk-up right on the corner, complete with tilting warehouse windows, some refrigeration, and all the components needed to make those fan favorite banh mi sandwiches.
Better still is the all-outdoor dining space, which is composed of a few tables and some Adirondack chairs over a carpet, all tucked behind some greenery and off the street. Add in the requisite string lights and suddenly the place looks as hip as anywhere else you might choose to dine in the neighborhood (the occasional sounds of auto body work notwithstanding).
Hours are limited at the moment to Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Banh Oui team of Casey Felton and Armen Piskoulian is still very much at Smorgasburg on Sundays. Their weekday menu includes everything from pork belly banh mi sandwiches to spare ribs, wings, shrimp toast, and a mean fried chicken sandwich. Need help finding the place? Just look for the white banner with the flying pig on it.
