One of South LA’s Most Prominent Restaurants Returns to Leimert Park

One of South LA’s most prominent restaurants has returned, with the new-look Earle’s Grill once again cooking off hot dogs and making big batches of vegan chili along Crenshaw Boulevard.

Fans of Earle’s may know the place by its former, more stylized name Earlez Grille, which has stood for more than a quarter-century. Their Crenshaw restaurant space ultimately gave out under the weight of the advancing Expo Line, leaving the family-run restaurant in a years-long transient phase. Now they’re back under the Earle’s Grill name, just a little further south in Leimert Park at the Crenshaw Square Shopping Center.

The restaurant has changed a good bit from the old days. There’s no seating inside anymore — this is fast-casual, order at the counter stuff with a standing rail to dine at along the outer window. You’ll also find a more truncated menu of longtime Earle’s hits, but don’t worry: the turkey chili, vegan options, and all-beef dogs haven’t gone anywhere.

In fact, checking in yesterday the place was basically as busy as ever. Neighborhood folks are wandering in, ordering up, and enjoying it all, glad to see the now 27-year-old restaurant back on the block. And with the continued growth of the whole strip along Crenshaw, it’s reasonable to assume another few decades for brothers Cary and Duane Earle, at least.
