North Hollywood is in line for a fancy new drink spot called Mirabelle Wine Bar, coming soon to Burbank Boulevard. Owner David Gibbs is a longtime touring musician with his heart in the old wine world, and is one of the operators behind popular nearby wine hang Augustine.
This time around, Gibbs has partnered with Augustine manager Nick Caballero (himself formerly involved with Luna Vine Wine Bar in Burbank) for a project that will span the gamut between Augustine and Bar Covell in Los Feliz. Gibbs was a regular at Covell for years before partnering with Dustin Lancaster to bring Augustine to life, and he maintains an affinity for that kind of laid-back, wine-focused neighborhood destination.
Enter the former Bar One Tap Room at Burbank and Whitsett in North Hollywood. The space closed in September after a lengthy run, and now Gibbs is on site looking to switch things up in time for a late-2017 arrival. They won’t be installing a hood or other kitchen equipment so that should help.
Instead, Mirabelle will focus on affordable wines by the bottle and the glass, with a light menu of Spanish-leaning bar bites like canned conservas, charcuterie, and anything else that can be put together with an electric convection oven and induction burner. Think Tabula Rasa’s bar menu, but with slightly more Spanish influence. As for the wine, expect an eclectic European and domestic list with some room for rare bottles, though nothing like the extensive old-time list that Augustine enjoys.
As for the space itself, expect a pulled-back look that plays to the 1950s-era building’s brick and rafter strengths. There will be some small lounge seating up front, then bar and two-top seating through to the back. Construction is underway now, so look for an opening late December or beyond.
