Beloved SGV Burmese Restaurant Daw Yee Myanmar Has Closed

Daw Yee Myanmar Cafe has closed its original San Gabriel Valley location, according to their Facebook page, which announced that the place closed in late October. One of LA’s standout Burmese restaurants, they spawned a second, more approachable location in Silver Lake last year called Daw Yee Myanmar Corner, in a bustling strip mall next to Same Same and Moon Juice. Apparently Daw Yee got into a lease issue with the landlord and wasn’t able to renew it.

Along with Yoma Myanmar, and a sprinkling of other Burmese places in the SGV, Daw Yee was one of the original places to get the unique Southeast Asian cuisine with specialties like tea leaf salad and mohinga, a curried noodle dish, to the greater LA area. When Daw Yee Myanmar Corner opened in Silver Lake, it was a big step toward bringing Burmese cuisine to the mainstream, and while that restaurant has been mostly successful, with strong reviews from Jonathan Gold and Yelp, this original spot in San Gabriel couldn’t hold on because of a lease issue.

Perhaps it will open again somewhere else in SGV. Eater reached out to Daw Yee, but wasn’t able to receive a response. In the meantime, here’s a video for Daw Yee Myanmar Corner, still open in Silver Lake.
