A new name steps up

There’s a new name stepping into the kitchen at Majordomo, David Chang’s forthcoming Chinatown restaurant: Jude Parra-Sickels. He’s in as executive chef, which means he’ll oversee the day-to-day operations while shaping and executing the restaurant’s vision alongside Chang. Parra-Sickels was in the Momofuku restaurant stream in New York City a decade ago, before relocating to Los Angeles to work with Roy Choi at POT at the Line Hotel. Most recently he was the executive chef at The Cannibal in Culver City.

On the other side of things, Christine Larroucau is in as general manager for Majordomo. She’s been in and out of the Mozza world for years, most recently as the general manager of Pizzeria Mozza.

Jonathan Gold weighs in

LA Times critic Jonathan Gold has weighed in on his favorite new dishes of 2017. It’s a pretty comprehensive list, from beans at Verlaine to the mozzarella sticks at Cosa Buona.

Ria Dolly Barbosa moves on

Forage co-chef Ria Dolly Barbosa is leaving the Silver Lake restaurant for parts unknown. After introducing a prodigious brunch program to the long-running Sunset Boulevard restaurant (her forte from time at Wild at Canele and Go Get Em Tiger), Barbosa is taking some time to prep for her next adventure.

Spartina party

Melrose Avenue Italian corner spot Spartina has turned two, and is celebrating the anniversary tonight. Expect $2 food and drink specials, plus a surprise winner of a $200 gift card.

Only Rush

On December 29, Long Beach bar Que Sera is turning into a Rush fan’s dream, playing only songs from the seminal Canadian rock band all night long. From hits to b-side cuts, expect to rock out with Rush for as long as possible.

Burger alert

The new Habit burger in Echo Park on Sunset Boulevard is apparently giving out free food this week. That’s according to The Eastsider, who say the first 200 folks in line after 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will get a taste of a pre-selected meal item while the staff trains up. Official opening is Friday.

The home kitchen
