One of Los Angeles’s most significant Chinese restaurant groups is opening up in Highland Park, bringing handmade dumplings to the doorstep of Figueroa Boulevard. Luscious Dumplings, with locations in Monrovia and San Gabriel, should be ready to jump into the white-hot Eastside real estate fray by sometime in early 2018.
Except, this won’t be any regular Luscious Dumplings. Instead, ownership has cooked up a new logo and name to go along with their small strip mall space: Mason’s Dumpling Shop. There’s already a banner hanging off the roof and everything.
Mason’s takes over for a short-lived taco shop in a strip mall at the corner of Figueroa and Avenue 58. There’s currently construction going on inside, but no confirmed opening date of yet. That said, Mason’s is sure to fit right into the neighborhood once it comes alive, as that corridor in particular has become a cross-cultural microcosm of Los Angeles at large.
There’s a vegan breakfast cafe and upscale sandwich shop nearby, along with classic jugos places, Tam’s Jr. Burger, Civil Coffee, Cafe Birdie, and the incoming Otoño. Needless to say, Mason’s Dumpling Shop will have some competition, though not specifically in the Chinese dumpling space.
Thankfully, the Luscious team knows a thing or two about standing out in a crowd. The company’s Monrovia location is a master class in handmade dumpling efficiency, turning out hundreds and hundreds every day — even as a younger generation of owner starts to take over.
