Tony Yanow and the curious case of the Brewer’s Collective
There’s life again at the corner of Sixth and La Brea, across the street from the redone La Brea Bakery and just steps from Republique (along with nearby places like Sugarfish, Odys + Penelope, Sycamore Kitchen, and Commerson) in what has quickly become Los Angeles’ new restaurant row. Paperwork is now up at the long-dormant build-out, and it points to none other than Tony Yanow and the Artisanal Brewers Collective. If you aren’t familiar with those names, you haven’t been paying attention to the past couple of weeks.
The ABC team (of which Yanow is a part) has been on a buying tear lately, picking up properties in the Valley, in Westwood, in West Adams, in West LA (maybe there’s a theme), and even bought up a collection of existing bars in Downtown. Now they’re preparing for Sixth & La Brea, the simply-named restaurant to be helmed by Trevor Faris, the longtime culinary lead for Yanow’s other projects in Mohawk Bend and Tony’s Darts Away. Look for an opening in 2018, much like all those other projects.
As for the West Adams situation, the proposed name of the big new indoor-outdoor property there is Clyde Curson’s, and you can catch a rendering of the place above and below. The ABC team is starting to go through all the necessary neighborhood hurdles now, with an opening still a ways off.

A new chef for Dudley Market
Looks like a return to form for Dudley Market in Venice, with chef Wesley Barden stepping in to run the restaurant. They’re turning back to dinner service as well (they still do lunch and breakfast), with the self-taught former Barnyard chef turning out more composed evening fare from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams gives back
Get to any location of Jeni’s tomorrow (that would be Los Feliz or Venice) on the early side, and 100% of proceeds will be going to the Pass it Along Fund, a sort of stopgap charity that helps folks in need. The party is only on the early side, from 9 a.m. to noon, so make ice cream your breakfast tomorrow.
A vital burger update
Things keep changing down at LocoL in Watts, with the latest addition to the menu this Southern California-inspired burger. Take a look at the new creation below, available as of yesterday.
Filipino chefs shine
There are more than a few fantastic Filipino chefs around Los Angeles to know about right now, so Spoon University went ahead and collected a bunch together in one handy list. There’s Alvin Cailan of course, plus Margarita Manzke, the LASA brothers, and more.
More cocktails in the Valley
There’s been a quiet new speakeasy spot brewing up in the Valley for a bit now, with Ventura Blvd. Magazine reporting on a third-floor drink situation atop The Federal Bar in North Hollywood. Barman Damian Windsor helped bring the quietly cool operation to life.
And tacos for all
Mexicali is giving back in a big way, celebrating their 5th anniversary with a free taco party. Show up between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on February 15 and get two free tacos just by saying “happy anniversary.”
