Sonoratown for the win

After weeks of online voting over at L.A. Taco, this year’s Taco Madness tournament has produced a single winner: Sonoratown. Or, more specifically given the parameters of this year’s competition, Sonoratown’s awesome carne asada taco, served on a freshly prepared flour tortilla.

Unlike in years past, where restaurants, trucks, and carts may be pitted in general against others either by geographic region or personal specialty, this year’s bracket was a free-for-all of specific dishes from places as wide-ranging as Tacos Arabes and Mariscos Jalisco and Burritos La Palma, with newcomer Sonoratown sneaking in on the mesquite-grilled carne asada side. It all worked out for them in the end, as the tiny Downtown shop managed to squeeze out a fan-voted victory by just a few dozen clicks. Congratulations.

An ice cream giveaway

There’s even more awesome ice cream in Los Angeles, it seems, with the promised arrival of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams coming to Larchmont tomorrow. The opening kicks off at 11 a.m., though the grand opening party is on Thursday, April 20 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., and will include free scoops and swag bags if you get in line early enough.

Glendale’s hidden gem

There’s a Chinese food buffet worth talking about in Glendale, though it may not come in a package you expect. As LA Weekly finds, FuJi Buffet seems to operate on a Japanese pretense, but actually carries a variety of tasty mainland dishes as well.

Pizza burgers are all the rage

LA Mag took a look at Meathead recently, the surprising Downtown burger-and-other-stuff shop that’s getting a rep for making the top bun of their burgers into little mini pizzas. Take a look.

Yorkshire Square Brewery

More news on Yorkshire Square Brewery, this time from the folks at FoodGPS. The cask-conditioned beer spot has arrived across the street from Honda’s headquarters in the South Bay, and folks are already excited.

Hal’s hits Playa Vista

It seems that Hal’s Bar & Grill has indeed hit Playa Vista after a bunch of shuffling around along Abbot Kinney. The newcomer quietly opened this week at The Runway project, as you can see from their recently activated website.
