The ice cream wars are, ironically, heating up fast, with the next big name to plot a new space being Magpies Softserve. The Silver Lake sweets spot is expanding into Tarzana, bringing their brand of upscale soft serve ice cream to the West Valley.
Right now, basically the only other competition out that way is the popular Wanderlust Creamery, which similarly is expanding in the other direction having just opened in Atwater Village. Now chef team Warren and Rose Schwartz are moving into the Tarzana neighborhood with a strip mall space that was formerly a Rita’s.
Reached by phone, Schwartz says the project is coming along nicely, with build-out currently underway. Because the space already had the underpinnings of an ice cream shop there wasn’t much heavy lifting to do, so instead most of the focus has been on cosmetic changes to lend the place some vibrancy.
Just like their Silver Lake strip mall original, Magpies Tarzana will cater to the family crowd, along with nostalgic East Coasters who don’t often find quality soft serve on this side of the country. That means housemade toppings, unique flavors, and those all-important waffle cones.
No official word on the opening of Magpies Tarzana just yet, but look for something in early May. When the doors to open wide, there’s likely to be a free first-day ice cream giveaway, too.
