Inside LA’s Newest Doughnut and Fried Chicken Colossus

East Coast favorite Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken has arrived with one big giveaway

The East Coast’s most famous chicken and sweets mash-up chain has made it west, with Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken landing in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles this week. That’s great news for fans of the fried chicken sandwich genre, and even better news for anyone intrigued by the idea of a crème brûlée doughnut.

The D.C.-area chain first announced plans to land near 6th and Grand late last year, and has since been in serious construction mode on a sparse 400 square foot space. Now it’s all coming together, with a targeted opening date of Wednesday, April 5, and plans for long, long lines.

To help keep those hungry folks happy, the Astro team is putting on a full-day giveaway — just show up and show someone at the counter that you follow the restaurant on Instagram and you’ll earn a free doughnut yourself. As for the full menu, there’s a slate of breakfast sandwiches on offer until 11 a.m. daily, with lunch and dinner fried chicken to come after that, plus the round-the-clock doughnuts themselves, of course.

Otherwise, feel free to saunter in soon for your next doughnut and fried chicken fix. The space is casual and inviting, with the requisite reclaimed wood alongside some whitewashed brick and a long open counter showing off the wares. The full glassed-in kitchen extends beyond, and there’s room for inside seating at the counter or with a handful of tables in the back and the patio out front. You should expect a Sidecar-like situation though, with lots of folks queuing up early for grab-and-go deliciousness.

Astro Doughnuts officially opens Wednesday, keeping hours Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, and 5 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
