Chef Wes Avila is flying high these days, working on the build-out for his Downtown Guerrilla Tacos restaurant while also ramping up for the eventual release of his first cookbook. Now you can see the opening cover for the taco grail (below), which comes out October 10 on Ten Speed Press.
Eater got access to an early look at the book, and the thing looks seriously promising. Not only are there collections of some of the more iconic tacos Avila ever made at his stand and, later, two iterations of his food truck, but the thing is also a collection of the chef’s own Mexican-American history growing up in Southern California. More than a few pages and images are dedicated to the places Avila has called home over the years, from Pico Rivera to his first stint in Downtown’s then-burgeoning Arts District.

For now, Avila is still slinging taco on the truck everywhere from Venice to Silver Lake, but soon he’ll be turning full-time to the Arts District once again for his first full-on restaurant, complete with an expanded menu like what you’ll find in the Guerrilla Tacos cookbook, plus a full bar. It’s good to be the taco king.
