More updates in Hollywood

Things are heating up at Hospital Club, the new members-only British expat club coming to the (now former) Redbury Hotel in Hollywood. The gigantic switcheroo has some serious backing from none other than Paul Allen, and is hoping to open next spring.

In the meantime, here’s a look inside the forthcoming tea room for the property. It’s just a rendering, but should give a pretty proper idea of what to expect from one of the bigger developments along Hollywood and Vine. And while the tea room will likely remain the purview of guests and friends only (much like Soho House, say), the ground-floor Cleo restaurant remains open and there’s also talk of a rooftop restaurant out by the pool.

Wexler’s newness

Wexler’s Deli in Santa Monica is expanding its menu with a run of new morning plates that include even more options like scrambled eggs and french toast. It’s a smart move, considering the restaurant opens at 7 a.m. daily and likely gets plenty of requests from people eager to order something other than just a straight-up bagel every time they stop in (no matter how delicious they are). The expanded menu launches late next week.

Best burger life

In need of a new summer deal? There’s a hot one at Ledlow right now, where $5 lands a pared down version of chef Josef Centeno’s beloved burger. Apparently it’s available daily too, from 5:30 p.m. to close, alongside boozy milkshakes and everything else on the usual Ledlow menu.

Origin story

71Above celebrates one year of business this month, but it’s truly the beginning of the sky-high fine dining restaurant that should be talked about more. Now Discover DTLA is on the case, hooking up with chef/partner Vartan Abgaryan to discuss in detail just how the place came to be. No surprise: It started with some very amazing views.

That Tumaca sandwich

Here’s a fun blurb on Tumaca, the Spanish-inspired food truck that’s been crawling around Los Angeles for a bit now. Writer Danielle Bernabe takes Facebook friends out to eat at their favorite sandwich places to discuss not only the meal but basically life itself — and this one gets pretty heady.

Ice cream dreams at Smorgasburg

Sunday is a perfect day to score some ice cream, as the summer temps will still be sky-high. That’s exactly why Downtown’s Smorgasburg is offering a whole slew of ice cream vendors to cool off with as part of their returning Ice Cream Alley series, including temporary newcomers like Baohaus from Chinatown.

Over time the party will also include names like Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Nancy’s Fancy (by Nancy Silverton), Sweet Rose Creamery, Salt & Straw, Smitten Ice Cream, and more. And while the party begins this Sunday, it will actually run every week through Labor Day, so there are lots of opportunities to get out and enjoy.
