Secretive Star Wars-themed pop-up bar Scum & Villainy Cantina is planning on sticking around a while longer. In fact, according to a post on Facebook yesterday, they’re going all the way permanent with their once-temporary Hollywood location.
Scum & Villainy raised a ton of eyebrows a year ago when it announced its arrival in Los Angeles via a series of cryptic websites and messages. Folks tried for months to get details on the pop-up and figure out just what would be going down inside, and the campaign ultimately culminated in a sold-out first run of ticketed nights.
They also offered a second ticket run down the line. Now ownership says they’ll be sticking around a while, going fully permanent and dropping the ticketing all together, so guests simply need to show up to enjoy themselves (though they still encourage costume-wearing). And, anyone who previously had an entrance token can show up at the bar with it for 10% off their final bill.
Interestingly, the move to go permanent and open the doors wide does not seem to stem from massive enduring success — like, say, if Wolvesmouth decided to open a regular restaurant after years of sold-out pop-up dinners — but rather the opposite. Diehard Star Wars fans have been a little let down by the detail work of the pseudo-replica of Mos Eisley Cantina, while casual observers have been chirping on Yelp and elsewhere about the high prices and occasionally poor service.
If anything, the jump to standard hours and an open door policy could be the shot in the arm the bar needs, and help Scum & Villainy move from pop-culture passing fancy to something more meaningful. Per the Facebook post, the bar jumps to standard hours Thursday through Sunday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., and they have tweaked a few details along the way:
We're making some changes to the menu, the music (you'll have access to a digital juke box filled with your favorite galactic and geeky tunes) and weekly offerings (trivia, bingo, cosplay specials) to become your local hive of movie, tv, and comics pop-culture.
Scum & Villainy Cantina can be found hiding away on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, and will keep hours this week for Friday and Saturday only. After that it’s weekly, Thursday through Sunday, requiring no cover charge or tickets.
