LA’s Famed Brooklyn Bagel Bakery Plans to Reopen in Late 2017

The beloved shop nearly collapsed in 2015

Things are churning along at Brooklyn Bagel Bakery off Beverly Boulevard, though they’re no longer planning to open by September. With permitting delays and ongoing construction, ownership says to expect a return sometime in November or December.

That’s tough news for fans of the longtime bagel operation who have been waiting years for its return following a sudden structural failure at their retail shop back in 2015. Still it’s obviously important to get these things right, so owner Vanik Elchibegian isn’t taking any chances, and continues to work closely with the city and structural engineers to make sure the place is safe and sound.

In the meantime, Brooklyn Bagel Bakery has continued to ramp up its wholesale side, adding clients and getting back onto menus across the city. When the retail portion of the operation does come back to life, it’ll add a consumer-facing element that’s been missing for years. Elchibegian says the new-look shop will offer a throwback look (complete with loads of original photographs) while playing to a new generation of coffee drinkers and bagel-lovers alike.

The timing for the reopening could end up being perfect for Brooklyn Bagel Bakery, given all the change that’s headed for Historic Filipinotown these days. New, hip coffee shops and burger spots are popping up left and right, to say nothing of the residential developments now dotting the landscape. Add in the resurgence of the common bagel at places like Belle’s Bagels, Maury’s, and even Courage Bagels, and Brooklyn Bagel Bakery could be poised for a storybook late-2017 comeback.
