Looks like you can’t keep a good burger place down, as evidenced by the news that Vaka Burgers will be returning to a new location in Boyle Heights. The popular shop used to operate inside of Ramirez Liquor (growing quite a cult following in the process) but fell out of favor with the landlords over a rent dispute.
Both sides tell a different tale of how it all went down, but regardless the move forced Vaka to relocate their primary operations to a bar in downtown Whittier. Now, according to the Vaka Burgers social media channels, they’re returning to where it all started — this time at Ray & Roy’s Market, a takeaway bottle shop on 4th Street. The jump puts them back in a rather similar position, once again cooking up big, flavorful burgers while surrounded by craft beer racks and fluorescent lights.

The jump to a new Boyle Heights address won’t (for the time being at least) stop them from running their Whittier location, as the Vaka team is still promoting that bar pop-up. Even the Beverly Boulevard location is coming along, with a proposed plan to be open by the end of the year. Below is a shot of the layout of that space, along with some more details on what exactly to expect inside:
Eater reached out for a timeline on the new Boyle Heights shop, but so far hasn’t heard back. It’s good to see the team return to the neighborhood that has helped to make them famous though — and once again inside a liquor store, no less.
