Alta Nordic Kitchen Now Serves Gravlax and Open-Faced Burgers Along Melrose

The Scandinavian restaurant quietly started service last night

Well that was fast. Just weeks after announcing the arrival of Alta Nordic Kitchen, a pan-Scandinavian restaurant headed for the former Smoke.Oil.Salt. space, word is the place is already up and running for dinner.

Chef Christer Larsson and his son must be quick. After years spent cooking in fast-paced New York City kitchens like Aquavit and Alta, Larsson slowed down in recent years with a West Coast gig inside the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group. Now he’s back up to speed working a menu that includes everything from gravlax toast to simple salads to wood-grilled halibut, with 16-ounce steaks for those feeling meaty, and a $15 burger that comes open-faced and topped with an egg. There will be wines too, both available by the glass and by the bottle, and mostly hovering in the $35 to $85 range. The opening menu is below.

Alta Nordic Kitchen is up and running now, keeping hours from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. only to start. That’s daily though, so no weekday closures on Monday or Tuesday — plus there’s going to be brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays too. Reservations can be made using OpenTable.
