West Third Street Just Added a Familiar New Gelato Shop Name

Gelateria Uli expands from Downtown to the main drag

Downtown cool-down shop Gelateria Uli is now up and running with a second location along West Third Street. The storefront officially opened on August 31, but has been keeping under the radar for the past week or so.

The surprisingly subtle opening was first reported by Hoodline, who noticed the classic-looking shop right around Labor Day. The white-walled room is still pretty spare, with a few pictures up on the walls and a cold case with room for 18 different flavors. There’s a helpful sandwich board sign pointing the customers in from outside, though, and with recently-soaring temperatures around greater Los Angeles it’s not hard to see customers coming in droves soon.

Gelateria Uli has long been an anchor tenant for Downtown’s Spring Arcade. The pass-through building was for years lightly trafficked save for Uli and options like Guisados, but of late has become more popular than ever, with room for brunch favorite Blu Jam and a new Cuban coffee shop next door.

Now with its new location, Gelateria Uli only needs to fight for relevance alongside nearby options like the Original Farmers Market, Milk on Beverly, and Carmela just up the street. BLD-attached ICDC couldn’t hold on up on Beverly Blvd, so it seems there’s room for more of just about everything along bustling West Third Street these days (including barbecue).

Hours for Gelateria Uli run noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, with an extension to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Sunday is 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
