Switcheroos in Silver Lake

There’s a new executive chef running the show at Barbrix in Silver Lake: Gavin Mills. The well-known chef has most recently been running things at Miro in the Financial District in Downtown, but joins the Silver Lake party to bring some updated looks to not only the brunch menu, but dinner as well. Mills made a name for himself in Downtown after years of working the Southern California gastropub circuit at places like Spare Tire, Boar Dough in Agoura Hills, and Wood & Vine in Hollywood. Expect even more charcuterie and pasta to come at Barbrix.

Cheese store moves

FoodGPS has some insight on a South Bay institution that’s moving into some new digs:

Santa Clarita wine time

Apparently the next big local wine region is ... Santa Clarita? That’s according to LA Weekly, who says the area well to the north has become a kind of hotbed for local wine lovers, from drinkers to producers and beyond.

Long Beach beer

There’s a lot to love about Long Beach’s still-emerging craft beer scene, from the local breweries to the big names helping to anchor the city to the south. HoppedLA takes a look at them all, from Beachwood on down.

No more Italian ice

Long-running Italian ice shop DiDio’s is apparently gone from Santa Monica. That’s per Toddrickallen, who says the 22-year-old storefront has shuttered permanently.

Depressed cakes for a cause

There’s another Depressed Cake Shop pop-up happening soon, this time in Beverly Hills. The event will take place on October 7 at Baby Bea’s Bakeshop, and will feature grey cakes that hide a rainbow of colors inside. All proceeds go to benefit the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
