Los Feliz caffeine option Maru Coffee is expanding from its tiny Hillhurst digs to something with a bit more square footage, taking over an open and airy warehouse location in the Arts District.

Maru will land inside the former Rabbit Crew space, a short-lived coffee shop on Santa Fe Avenue with tall ceilings and big windows up front. Strangely enough, Rabbit Crew only managed to hold on for about six months — a rarity in currently coffee-obsessed Los Angeles — before calling it quits in early December.

So now comes Maru, the dialed-back Los Feliz player with its muted tones and subtle decor. Their diminutive first location has quickly become a favorite in coffee-obsessed Los Feliz, so ownership plans to try their luck in Downtown with early a.m. through evening hours daily. To start they’ll just be focusing on coffee and pastries, but ownership tells Eater that pop-up nights and one-off events could be in the works inside the large space soon.

Expect an opening sometime next month for Maru Coffee in the Arts District. In the meantime, there are plenty of other caffeine options along that drag, from Stumptown and Daily Dose to RVCC Intersect practically across the street.
