Westwood’s long-dead Jerry’s Deli space has earned new life, with a fresh lease on the place going to none other than The Waffle. The Hollywood brunch hit has long been a morning anchor along Sunset Boulevard, but now is branching out to the college crowd.
The new Westside location for The Waffle will put them in the midst of 37,000 UCLA students and thousands more nearby residents, with a targeted opening happening later this year. The space is right around the corner from ice cream cookie sandwich king Diddy Riese on one of the more heavily-trafficked drags in greater Westwood.
This expansion is the first of its kind for The Waffle owners Gavin Polone and John Papsidera. The pair landed their current Hollywood restaurant a decade ago, and have steadily grown the restaurant into a powerhouse for breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch. The place carries over 1,400 starred reviews on Yelp, and is rivaled only by The Griddle further west in its popularity on the restaurant reviewing platform.
Jerry’s Deli, meanwhile, has suffered a slew of defeats since first closing in Westwood in 2013. Locations in Woodland Hills and Marina del Rey have shuttered in recent years, and the outlet on Beverly Boulevard was flipped rather nicely into a Granville Cafe last spring.
