Don’t look now, but Magnus Nilsson is currently taking over the kitchen at Sqirl in Virgil Village. The seriously celebrated new Nordic chef hails from the two-Michelin-starred Swedish restaurant Faviken, long a top destination for international culinary travelers and a breakout star from the series Chef’s Table on Netflix. Nilsson has been in town promoting his cookbook, but today’s pop-up at Sqirl is the only time stateside that he’ll be actually cooking any food. Expect classic pastries from mandelmussla (“Christmas cake”) to traditional cinnamon buns to shortbreads, along with savory-side stuff like Swedish rye bread with eggs and anchovy, or a Swedish take on Sqirl’s own popular porridge. The event runs today only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Along the river
The longstanding Texaco station in Silver Lake is getting a new home, after a number of neighborhood folks tried to landmark the property as a way to keep out a big developer. A new deal has been struck, says Curbed LA, that will rehab and transport the building over to the LA River to be used as a cafe.
Civil Coffee in Highland Park is turning three years young this weekend, and they’re doing a bunch of deals and fun stuff to celebrate, including live music, free coffee, and $3 off food.
Food & Wine has the line on some seriously awesome breakfast in the San Fernando Valley. Apparently, just by following along with the restaurants that dot Sherman Way, one can find the true, multicultural center of the future of LA breakfast.

Celaya Bakery has closed in Echo Park. The 50-year Mexican bakery legend tells The Eastsider that “it wasn’t an easy decision” to shutter.
