The Gold legacy

The Los Angeles Times is moving ahead with plans for its annual 101 best restaurant list and gala, the first to be produced since the death of legendary food writer and critic Jonathan Gold this summer. The announcement of the upcoming event was made on social media yesterday, with both the location (The MacArthur) and December 3 date confirmed. This year’s event will not, however, carry a direct nod to Gold in the name itself, a departure from years past and one that raised a few questions in the comments on Instagram. Instead it’s being titled simply: 101 Restaurants We Love. Reps for the LA Times say that the legacy of Gold, who is also getting a James Beard Foundation Award named after him this year, will of course still be heavily featured at the event, and that his undeniable presence will still be felt at both the publication and their food programming moving forward.

The newcomer

Chef Greg Daniels has officially opened Harley in Laguna Beach. The Orange County restaurant has its first night of service tonight, working a seasonal menu that meanders between rockfish ceviches and grilled avocados to coffee-rubbed wild boar loin. 370 Glenneyre St., Laguna Beach, CA.

Dish talks

Sonoratown got a nice little video feature recently from the folks at Tastemade, who spent time inside the Downtown taqueria discussing recipes, heritage, and what it means to cook in Los Angeles. Check it out.

As I get ready for work on this 1st of November, I can’t believe what an October we just had. It felt overwhelming and I didn’t have time to process everything that happened... so let me leave a quick digital marker of the passage of time here on insta. #1. Our episode of “Dish” came out on @tastemade and it was so awesome (terrifying, humbling, humiliating, cool, emotionally complex) to see ourselves on camera making simple food from @teo.diaz childhood on a program that usually spotlights famous chefs. #2 #3 #4 Sonoratown was asked to fulfill a delivery order for @reneredzepinoma @nadinelevyredzepi & @david_zilber at a book signing being held at @nowservingla & of course- we showed up with a catering spread and cooked onsite-because if we were going to get one shot to cook for the food Gods- the food had better be hot. #5 we made a quick trip to #tijuana thanks to @danimalflowers & @bonnieraehfa for facilitating that for us- we love you. #6 @mattymatheson came to visit and it seemed like he enjoyed the food- which is so awesome (Congrats on the new ) #7 @dinela included Sonoratown in the #tacotrek -a printed guide to the best of LA’s taco scene Thank you very much ♥️ #8 @ciaosamin wrote some articles about our tortillas and our beef chivichanga for the @nytmag which is still unbelievable to me #9 our golden tortilla from last month’s #gustavosgreattortillatournament was delivered by #kcrw #10 @eater_la put us on their 38 essential restaurants list for fall!! What? Thank you to @mattkang12 & @overoverunder for letting that typo slip through two times in a row now ✌️ I have to go to work now but to all of our regulars- all of the people who have come by to try the food anyone reading this far into this long post... thank you- come have some tacos I’d love to see your beautiful face #yarribasonora #yarribaelnorte #DTLA #sonorenses #sanluisriocolorado #tortillasdearina #tortillasdeharina #flournotcorn #amorycarino #gracias #taqueria #sevaseronosevaserlacarnitasada #alcarbonsabemejor

Cars and food

Here’s a funky one: LA Weekly has details on The Horseless Carriage out in North Hills. The odd restaurant was first conceived as a way to draw attention to an attached car dealership, but has since become a prime rib-serving staple all its own.

Flip-arounds

The former Fleming’s space in Beverly Hills has a new tenant, reports Toddrickallen. The incoming restaurant is none other than casual Mexican micro-chain Frida’s, which already has locations all over the city.

Market changes

The famous Santa Monica Farmers Market is getting a new leader, as first reported by the LA Times. The iconic and genre-defining market has been helmed by Laura Avery for many years, but now she’s planning to officially retire by the end of the year, with no replacement yet named.

Imperial updates

Imperial Western Beer Company at Union Station has expanded hours, adding lunch and weekend brunch. The new menus are below.
