A Trendy Veggie Newcomer Debuts Today in Silver Lake

A mostly-vegan destination for a quiet neighborhood

Check out the colorful turnaround at Silver Lake’s former Hot Hot Food. The new restaurant to take its place, Jewel, is now officially serving the neighborhood, offering a mostly-vegan menu of dishes designed to play to the changing Virgil Village community.

Whereas Hot Hot Food offered an eclectic mix of fried rice dishes, Jewel stakes its claim as a place for health-conscious types to eschew meat and dairy if they like, while their non-vegan friends chow down on added eggs to almost any dish on the menu. Expect porridge, oats, toasts, and mains like breakfast burritos in the morning, followed by salads, bowls, meatless burgers, and a pizza in the afternoon. The opening menu is below.

Jewel is the work of partners Jasmine and Sharky Shimoda, with some backing from previous Hot Hot Food owner Coly Den Haan. Chef Jasmine Shimoda was formerly running the show at The Springs wellness sanctuary in the Arts District, but has moved out on her own now that the prior gig has gone belly up. Jewel is officially open now, keeping weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and weekend hours starting at 9 a.m.
