It’s hard to believe Danny Meyer opened Shake Shack’s first LA location in 2016 in West Hollywood. The popular New York-based burger stand’s rapid expansion becomes fully realized when their seventh location opens this Friday in Downtown LA. This latest opening, just across the street from the Golden Gopher, and right next door to the Freehand Hotel, represents the clearest analogue to Shake Shack’s spiritual home in Manhattan.
The surrounding area has a high concentration of high-end neighbors, with The Exchange on the same block, and Shibumi, though there are also plenty of fast casual competitors. And even though the latter is a factor: expect to stand in line during the first few weeks.
The opening team put some exclusive extras on the DTLA menu, including frozen custards, and the California exclusive Roadside Double with Swiss, dijon, and bacon and beer simmered onions. And for those who want to feel better about indulging, the DTLA location is donating 5% of sales from the Pie Oh My custard to the Inner-City Arts, an organization dedicated to underserved Los Angeles youth.
The company commits to reusing as much as possible, and the design took reclaimed bowling alley lanes for tabletops, along with booths and chairs that use sustainable materials at what used to be the Vault nightclub. The 3,000 square foot Eighth Street location opens on Friday, and will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
