Some of America’s Best Burger Makers Converge on Downtown This Month

Smorgasburg flips

Some of America’s best burger makers are heading to Smorgasburg in Downtown on May 27 for an all-day beef and bun bonanza, with George Motz overseeing the whole affair. Motz is America’s foremost burger expert, and he’ll be making his famous Oklahoma fried onion burgers, while Alvin Cailan will be doing his own thing alongside names like Cassell’s in Koreatown, Fukuburger in Las Vegas, the NoMad truck, and Pie N’ Burger out of Pasadena. Get there early on May 27 for the party.

Best young chefs

Robb Report is out with its list of the best young chefs in America, and Simone’s Jessica Largey made the seven-person cut. Congrats to her, and here’s to an exciting summer opening up Simone in the Arts District.

Pez party

Downtown’s Pez Cantina is partying hard on Bunker Hill for Cinco de Mayo. Expect tacos, Mexican beer, a live mariachi, and more.

Another day, another Deadpool pop-up. This one is going down at a 7-11 in Burbank to serve up Slurpees and chimichangas on Thursday, reports the Press-Telegram.

Award-winning

Beer Advocate has named Yorkshire Square Brewery in Torrance as one of the 50 best new breweries in America. Perfect timing, as it coincides with the company’s one year anniversary party this weekend.

Eric Greenspan again

Chef Eric Greenspan is at it again, having launched a new breakfast burrito delivery-only concept to run on UberEats. From now until May 4, meatless breakfast burritos are only $3.50, delivered right to the front door.

Off menu fun

Connie & Ted’s has a new lineup of “secret” menu items to know about. There’s the lobster BLT, the Old Bay fries, lobster poutine, and a whole lot more to ask for. It’s all in service of the restaurants’ five-year anniversary, with the menu items running all summer long.

Chef updates

There’s a new executive chef at Downtown barbecue restaurant Horse Thief. It’s Ty-Lör Boring, the longtime New York City resident who has been on Top Chef and worked as chef de cuisine at Hill Country BBQ Market.

Tumbi turns up

Santa Monica’s new modern Indian restaurant Tumbi has turned on the lights for lunch, and will now run daily hours from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The opening daytime menu is below.
