Great news for yakitori fans, as international hit Yardbird from Hong Kong has secured a space in Downtown Los Angeles. They’ll be opening sometime in the middle of next year.
Hong Kong’s Yardbird is a massively popular destination for meat skewers grilled over charcoal, for drinks, and tons of other snacks, and now it’s coming to Los Angeles in a big way. Co-owners Lindsay Jang and Matt Abergel previously told Eater about their plans to jump to the West Coast, but now the team has an official address they’re willing to share: 510 South Broadway. That puts them inside the renovated Pettebone Building in the Historic Core, steps from the Spring Arcade, The Last Bookstore, and the Pershing Square Metro stop.
Jang tells Eater that this location of Hong Kong’s Yardbird will keep much of the same look and feel as the Hong Kong mainstay, including most likely not taking reservations. There will be cool, modern touches to go along with the lively atmosphere and smoky food, and hopefully late night hours for the post-shift dining set. It will not, however, be keeping the name Yardbird, owing to the existence of Yardbird Southern Table & Bar, a chain of American restaurants with a new location that opened earlier this year inside the Beverly Center.
As for competition, Los Angeles is in the throes of an outright yakitori explosion. There are a ton of classic places still doing great work, but with the new Inko Nito in the Arts District, Hatch Yakitori in Downtown, and the recent flip of Chaya in Venice, now is a great time to be loving on smoked meat skewers. Also note that despite the exact same name, there’s no relation between Yardbird Hong Kong and the Miami-based Southern restaurant Yardbird that opened a few months ago at The Beverly Center.
