When 10 Speed Coffee opened inside Pedaler’s Fork in 2011, founders Gideon Kleinman and Robbie Schaeffer simply wanted a cafe next to their favorite mountain biking trails and cycling routes near Calabasas. The duo applied same recipe to their forthcoming Santa Monica location, which opens mid-July on the corner of 20th and Santa Monica Boulevard.
Santa Monica’s 10 Speed has 1,000 square feet of space for cyclists, laptop warriors, and hospital workers, along with a 600 square foot patio. Expect pre-packaged salads and sandwiches from Pedaler’s, fresh juice from Juice Budz, and pastry from Bakers Kneaded. Though there’s a heavy emphasis on cycling culture, repairs, and activities, Kleinman welcomes all. 10 Speed offers secure bike racks, along with an underground parking lot.
The team chose a location close to Santa Monica’s mountain biking trails, but the cafe will also fill a gap. The surrounding neighborhood has a dense group of hospitals, office buildings, and health care workers with only few dining options. Kleinman noted, “We wanted to be next to a hospital for health care professionals that need it. Coffee is a serious commodity when working at or visiting a hospital. We have a chance to give a good product to those that are overworked and underappreciated.”
The neighborhood’s transformation is imminent. 10 Speed’s opening is the first food arrival, with Meanwhile, the area has some incoming restaurants: Border Grill’s Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger are opening a new Mexican restaurant in the near future while one block over, Bruce Marder’s Red Rooster bakery is still under construction.
10 Speed Coffee chugs along despite some sets backs in the coffee-bicycle combination. The Wheelhouse closed last year, though Spoke Bicycle Cafe, Bicycle Coffee, and á Bloc continue to fuse the two avocations. Super Domestic Coffee is LA’s newest cycling-centric shop, which opened June 4. Once 10 Speed Coffee opens, hours will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
