Brisket love
Ray’s Barbecue in Huntington Park is in the news again, this time getting a big, sunny profile in Texas Monthly magazine by none other than BBQ legend Daniel Vaughn. There’s a lot going on in in the piece, from owner Ray Ramirez’s love of Texas-style brisket to his “otherworldly” Duroc pulled pork, but a good chunk of the story surrounds the self-made chef’s beginning as an underground barbecue sensation in his community, selling from his backyard like so many others do now.
Redondo done
A big plan to remake the Redondo Beach waterfront with tons of new development seems dead in the water. That’s the word from Curbed LA, who say the project was already unpopular with area residents, and has now been pulled from consideration.
Shibumi for good
Downtown Japanese restaurant Shibumi is setting up for what looks to be an amazing charity event this weekend. The Sunday dining option is part of The Life Cycle of Food, an ongoing collaboration that also involves Triniti in Echo Park and the Akasa Community Outreach non-profit, aiming to help low-income communities and schoolchildren. The dinner seats 45 only and is spread across eight courses, with chefs like Jeremy Fox and Jessica Koslow in attendance as well. Tickets are $135.
Employees agree
LA Magazine gives some love to Employees Only, the legendary New York City bar that opened in West Hollywood earlier this year. Dig in for a discussion on the drinks, the vibe, and everything else.
Canter’s callbacks
LA Times occasional contributor Evan Kleiman gives a hearty endorsement to Canter’s Deli, the Fairfax institution that’s still looking to rebound after a rough past year that saw a temporary health department shutdown and reduction of hours. In short, the place is still as quirky and wonderful as ever.
Street food
Chef Johnny Lee is doing a street food pop-up at Union Swap Meet in Silver Lake. It’s called Dai Pai Dong and is tailored after Hong Kong’s prodigious street food scene, with classic dishes from the region available from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on July 24.
El Tejano’s newest look
Woodland Hills is getting its very own El Tejano soon. The Tex-Mex restaurant is setting up shop at 21028 Ventura Boulevard with an eye towards opening on July 31. Look for lunch through dinner hours, as well as a prodigious happy hour. The opening menu is below.
