Chef Wes Avila and partner Brittney Valles are close to opening their first-ever brick and mortar version of Guerrilla Tacos in the Arts District. According to the team, the inaugural night of service will be this Thursday, July 26.
Avila has been cooking for limited friends and family inside the corner restaurant off 7th Street since last weekend, and a few social media peeks have begun to slip out. The former home of longstanding restaurant La Reyna has been completely overhauled, and now features booths, graffiti on the walls, and a full bar from the Va’La Hospitality team out of Boyle Heights. It’s also worth noting that the artwork will include an homage to the late Jonathan Gold in the form of a spray-painted silhouette of his image.
When Guerrilla Tacos does open to the public later this week, diners will also be able to enjoy an expanded menu of tacos, sides, and specials, thanks to the restaurant’s large kitchen. That’s not saying much, considering Avila started out six years ago with a flattop griddle in front of Handsome Coffee in the Arts District, and was for years confined to a small food truck only. He officially gave up the truck last week in a final blowout party outside longtime weeknight stop Silverlake Wine. Guerrilla Tacos opens on Thursday for dinner. Expect limited hours to start.
