LA’s Best German-Style Doner Kebab Doubles Footprint With Two New Locations

New, 1 comment

Plus a Blue Star Donuts giveaway, and a late night party at Winsome

More meat

German-style doner kebab shop Berlins is in expansion mode, opening up two new locations this year. The West Third Street restaurant originally pushed into secondary digs in Venice a while back, and is now jumping to Koreatown’s long-dormant Wilshire Boulevard food hall called Platform 35. That won’t happen until October though, so in the meantime the Berlins team is jumping to 15928 Ventura Blvd. in Encino, with a soft opening planned for Saturday night. Add in Spitz, SpireWorks, and Hollywood’s new Kebbros, and suddenly doner kebabs are very much back in vogue.

Blue Star news

Portland export Blue Star Donuts is expanding to Silver Lake, and to celebrate the new address at 3430 Sunset Boulevard the company is hosting a doughnut giveaway this Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. Limit one per person, of course.

Bazaar times

The Bazaar by Jose Andres is hosting its own version of the tomato-throwing festival La Tomatina, except this time the competition goes down across twelve courses, with dishes ranging from jamon and egg with tomato to a tomato meringue sandwich. The meals are available from August 29 to September 5, and run $80 per person.

Wanderlusting

Wanderlust Creamery is celebrating its three-year anniversary on August 28, offering buy-one-get-one-free scoops for anyone who shows up to any of their locations.

Winsome party

Echo Park’s Winsome is hosting a party today to raise money for wildfire relief efforts across California. The $25 get down starts up at 10 p.m. and goes until 1:30 a.m. as a kind of LA vs. NYC battle between menu items like pizza, tacos, and more — plus wine, of course.

Drinks and music

A new Chinatown music and art festival called Secret Project is coming October 13 and 14, with Majordomo and Apotheke both heavily involved in the event, doing cocktails and big dinners on the premises.

Bavel love

TimeOut critic Simon Majumdar loves a lot about Bavel in the Arts District, calling it a “buzzing Middle Eastern gem” in his four-star review.

Shake for good

Chef Ollie Walleck of Freehand Chicago will be in town this weekend, running a guest chef series at Broken Shaker from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday only. The open-to-the-public barbecue night will benefit the Sylvia Rivera Law Project.
