Pasadena’s Breezy New Breakfast Spot Serves Polished California Basics

The sunny new Superba Snacks + Coffee opens on Thursday

Superba Snacks + Coffee in Pasadena

Pasadena will awaken to a nice surprise on Thursday, with the happy early morning opening of Superba Snacks + Coffee on South Arroyo Parkway. The long-gestating daytime cafe sits as a separate building on the same property as the existing Pitfire Pizza, with the whole new corner connection lovingly called the Gonzoplex.

For those unfamiliar, both Pitfire and Superba are the work of Paul Hibler and company, whose restaurant group operates under the American Gonzo Food Corporation moniker. That collection encompasses Fairfax’s Gesso restaurant, Pie Society, and a number of other upcoming projects. And, now, the next iteration of all things Superba.

This Snacks + Coffee outpost is as sunny as they come, wrapped at both ends by big, functional glass panels that open out into patio seating areas. The John Reed and Marissa Solomon-interior is meant as a nod to mid-century functionality and California’s enduring cafe culture, where bright colors play against wall art and touches of green.

There’s a small grab and go selection of breads, drinks, and pre-made dishes for those in need, and a wide ordering counter for the breakfast and lunch basics from chef Anthony Goodwin. Expect salads, simple sandwiches, and weekend brunch along with milkshakes, freshly baked madeleines available at nearly a moment’s notice, and 49th Parallel coffee cocktails available. The opening menu is below.

Superba Snacks + Coffee opens in Pasadena on Thursday morning, keeping hours from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.
