Table 500
Looking for an even more intimate dining experience at LA’s true do-it-all restaurant Republique? There’s a table for that now. For years, Walter and Margarita Manzke have envisioned a tasting menu setup at their ultra-busy La Brea restaurant, but space considerations (and a volume of evening a la carte diners) have made that all but impossible, at least until now. In a newsletter email sent yesterday, the restaurant noted seats for a new “multi-course tasting menu” called Table 500, that is “curated by executive chef Walter Manzke for parties of four to eight people.” The dinner would take place in one of the restaurant’s upstairs areas, removed from the dining floor, and there is an option for add-ons like wine pairings from wine director Sam Rethmeier as well. Got half a dozen friends and want to check it out? Tickets start at $250 a head on Tock.
Another one for the Finnish Flash
Legendary hockey player and Orange County restaurateur Teemu Selanne has opened up his casual spot the Penalty Box at SteelCraft Garden Grove. The repurposed container store park is now home to Selanne’s casual menu of burgers (aka “pucks”), hot dogs, and even a variety of poutines. 12900 Euclid Ave., Garden Grove.
More meat for Oxnard
Texas de Brazil Churrascaria has opened a new location in Oxnard. The chain steakhouse marries Texas and Brazilian flavors at a new location at 2770 Seaglass Way inside the Collection at RiverPark, with servers working the room offering slices of everything from filet mignon to bacon-wrapped chicken breast.
Growing the game
Cassia Rice & Noodle Kitchen, the casual delivery-only sub-restaurant that operates from within Santa Monica hotspot Cassia, is now open every day. That means diners in the delivery vicinity can get wonton noodle soup and more delivered on Friday and Saturday nights as well, from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Partnership priorities
The Alamo Drafthouse has partnered with Boomtown Brewery on a new collaboration beer inspired by South Korean director Bong Joon Ho. It’s called Bong Joon Hops, and is available now in conjunction with the director’s upcoming film Parasite.
Cheezin’ it
The Cheezus folks are teaming up with Big Mozz, makers of Smorgasburg’s popular mozzarella sticks, in what has to be the most wonderfully easy collaboration of all time. The pair is doing a mega-cheesy Italian carrozza sandwich over the next to weekends, with a meat option available as well. Dang.
