A fast goodbye

Silver Lake pasta restaurant Asso has unceremoniously closed, though ownership says they plan to reopen once again before the end of the year. Asso took over the shuttered two-story Vietnamese restaurant Blossom on Sunset back in April, but had so far failed to find firm traction within the neighborhood. Now a note up on the glass front door says that the restaurant will be closed from mid-October on. “We are planning to re-open in December,” it reads, adding “We thank you for your continued love and support.”

The most important meal of the day

Here’s a look inside the recently-opened second location of Highlight Coffee in northern Pasadena. The sunny newcomer keeps the same pared-back perspective as the Glendale original, and is running weekday hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. 2071 Lincoln Avenue.

Your weekend plans, made

The pita party is moving to Woon this weekend. Zoë Food Party is heading to the Historic Filipinotown restaurant on Sunday, November 3 for an afternoon collaboration that includes Woon’s very own pork belly inside those famously fully pitas.

The chamoy conversation

The latest episode of Richard’s Famous Food Podcast is all about that Mexican sweet (and often spicy) treat chamoy. As L.A. Taco notes, the in-depth episode speaks with plenty of local voices on the matter of all things chamoy, and it comes just in time for the final candy-fueled push to Halloween.

Vital burger news

LA Times co-critic Patricia Escárcega used her weekly newsletter to extoll the virtues of the always-popular Hawkins House of Burgers in Watts. The small takeaway certainly doesn’t skimp on portion sizes, but that’s part of the charm.

Weekend dining vibes

Echo Park’s Adamae has launched brunch. The weekend meal includes everything from date french toast to hash, salads, and the classic two-egg plate. The opening menu, available Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., is below.
